Senior Project 12

Date of Service: April 26, 2011

Time Spent: 2:30 hours

Total Time: 24:00 hours

Well what do you know I go to the game and what do I see, only players at the game, and I recall that's not even enough to fill a roster. They get beaten really badly because no one shows up. The coach got fed up and told the team if nobody shows up for practice they will forfeit the next game. I am wondering if this will drill it into their heads that practice is mandatory to get better.

Another day at practice and I am surprised that only 7 people out of 14 show up. they need to make the commitment, and try harder to get there. I heard form the coach that the kids are starting to quit because the team "sucks." That just sunk me because they should be playing for the love of the game. Playing sports at this age can mold a kid to who they will become, as how i felt playing little league myself. Only a couple of kids on the team are really dedicated and i can see some success in a lot of things that they will do.

After a homework session with the kids they seem to like me more and more each day. They like asking me for help because I am not as old as the people helping them and I don't pose as a threat to them. I arrived earlier than the coach that day and the players confronted me as if they wanted to start a fight. I tried to get them to calm down and they just had this animalistic mind thought. I somewhat felt threatened, and never the less the rest of the practice we were giving each other "the look." These kids have no respect for anyone and I feel if they keep with this sports program in the B&G Club they will be able to learn a lot of lessons that they can use later.

Date of Service: April 19, 2011

Time Spent: 3:00 hours

Total Time: 16:30 hours

I'm here at my second game and most of the team is here which is good because they are learning some responsibility of commitment. I my team on the bench and they are not paying attention at all and they are goofing off. I know for a fact that the other team is not better then them, but they are still losing. It is discipline that they don't have, and although the coach tries to drill it into them it still hasn't peeked through yet. When I look at them even though they don't show any love for the game, they are still here. I wonder all the time what would happen to these kids if they didn't have the Boys and Girls program to go to.

Time Spent: 2:30 hours

Total Time: 13:30 hours

The coach made them run the whole practice, and while they were getting their sweat on I was able to talk to the coach. He said that the kids have nothing going for them in their lives, and its hard to really teach these kids when they don't believe in themselves. Sports can help the kids in many ways that will most likely spur them in the right direction and get them on the road to a more educational success.

Apparently the coach didn't like their attitude in the game before. He said to his team, "You guys showed no heart for the game, and even though you were losing there was no effort brought to the game." just like in school I suppose they give up on something they cannot get a hold of. I believe if they can hold onto this and stay the whole season they will be able to perform better in school because its the same kind of lessons you can learn.

Today I wanted to spend time in the art room. Although much doesn't happen that room you can feel the strong vibe of freedom. I sat there and mainly watched the kids go crazy and draw. Observing them you can tell that they feel less stress from their school work and express themselves.
